RESUMO

The thorough redox alteration of a lava flow is an undescribed feature in intraplate basaltic provinces. The Early Cretaceous (134.5 Ma) Paraná Province displays that alteration in the major Muralha Flow. This oxidized and reduced flow from the southern part of the province was studied with satellite images, field surveying, petrography, and published whole rock geochemistry. The 100 x 100 km flow from the Cuesta de Haedo presents two hydrothermal tiers - lower Tier 1 is gray to white, upper Tier 2 is red. Iron oxyhydroxides characterize Tier 2. Tier 1 contains clay minerals, zeolites, pyrite and calcite, and agate (possibly amethyst) geodes. In a first event, the upper Tier 2 was oxidized by hot water from the underlying Guarani Paleoaquifer. The high water/rock ratio decreased due to porosity clogging by precipitation of secondary minerals, and the fluid became reducing. Lowering of Eh and pH was caused by reaction of water with reducing particles (calcite, organic molecules) present in the paleoerg sandstones and with fresh rock surfaces. A lower Tier 1 was then formed during slow, hot water percolation. Reduction was interrupted below 30 °C (calcite formation). Large scale, similar alteration occurred in all studied oceanic ridges and only rarely in continental environments.

RESUMO

Modal classifications of common volcanic rocks are expensive, difficult, or impossible to attain. As a consequence, these rocks are classified using the chemical composition. However, existing classificatory diagrams are unable to identify all 16 families of common volcanic rocks; the most used is the total alkali-silica (TAS) diagram that identifies six families. Rocks not in the TAS diagram are misclassified with other rock names; their names are evolving to extinction, e.g. latite and rhyodacite. Some diagrams use Na2O, which is a complicating element rather than discriminant. Na2O is present both in alkali feldspar and plagioclase making difficult the separation of the amount associated to either feldspar. Silicon, potassium, and calcium are the three major elements with highest variations among volcanic rocks. They are selected for use in two new diagrams confronting CaO/K2O ratio with K2O content (KCK diagrams). One diagram is designed for saturated (intermediate) rocks (quartz <5 vol.%) and the other for oversaturated (acid) volcanic rocks (quartz >5%). These diagrams are tested using compositions of volcanic rocks from Uatumã magmatism in the Amazon Craton and also by plotting compositions of rocks from type-localities and the world averages. The proposed limits between rock families agree with plotted rock compositions. The KCK diagrams are an alternative to existing diagrams to classify volcanic rocks.

Age delimitation integrated with aeromagnetometric and aerogammaspectrometric survey advances the understanding of ophiolite evolution in the Brasiliano Orogen. We focused on the Bossoroca ophiolite, because oceanic crustal and mantle rocks contain zircon in metasomatic chloritite. A metadiorite and a metavolcanoclastic rock were also studied to delimit relationship between ophiolite and island-arc infrastructure and superstructure. Zircon crystals were dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy. Ages of zircon from Campestre metavolcanoclastic rock are 920-840 (peak 842) Ma, Bossoroca chloritite 900-800 (peak 868 Ma) and Capivaras metadiorite 698 Ma. Ages 920-800 Ma correspond to processes in the oceanic crust, whereas 698 Ma was a late magmatic intrusion (Capivaras metadiorite) into the island-arc infrastructure. Aeromagnetometric and aerogammaspectrometric data delimit the occurrence and structure of the ophiolite. These are major multiproxy markers of geotectonic processes early in the Brasiliano Orogen.

The occurrences of glassy rocks containing long and curved phenocrysts in the Paraná volcanic province, South America, are here interpreted as paralavas. The large number of thin (0.1-0.5 m) dikes and sills of glassy volcanic rocks with hopper, hollow or curved, large crystals of clinopyroxene (up to 10 cm), plagioclase (up to 1 cm), magnetite and apatite are contained in the core of thick (>70 m) pahoehoe flows. They are strongly concentrated in the state of Paraná, coincident with the presence of the large number of dikes in the Ponta Grossa arch. These rocks were previously defined as pegmatites, although other names have also been used. A paralava is here interpreted as the product of melting of basaltic rocks following varied, successive processes of sill emplacement in high-kerogen bituminous shale and ascent of the resultant methane. As the gas reached the lower portion of the most recent lava flow of the volcanic pile, the methane reacted with the silicate and oxide minerals of the host volcanic rock (1,000 ºC) and thus elevated the local temperature to 1,600 ºC. The affected area of host rock remelted (possibly 75 wt.%) and injected buoyantly the central and upper portion of the core. This methane-related mechanism explains the evidence found in the paralavas from this volcanic province, one of the largest in the continents.

An integrated evaluation of geology, aerogammaspectrometry and aeromagnetometry of the Sul-Riogran-dense Shield is permitted by the advanced stage of understanding of the geology and geochronology of the southern Brazilian Shield and a 2010 airborne geophysical survey. Gamma rays are registered from the rocks near the surface and thus describe the distribution of major units in the shield, such as the Pelotas batholith, the juvenile São Gabriel terrane, the granulite-amphibolite facies Taquarembó terrane and the numerous granite intrusions in the foreland. Major structures are also observed, e.g., the Dorsal de Canguçu shear. Magnetic signals register near surface crustal compositions (analytic signal) and total crust composition (total magnetic signal), so their variation as measured indicates either shallow or whole crustal structures. The Caçapava shear is outstanding on the images as is the magnetic low along the N-S central portion of the shield. These integrated observations lead to the deepening of the understanding of the largest and even detailed structures of the Sul-Riograndense Shield, some to be correlated to field geology in future studies. Most significant is the presence of different provinces and their limits depending on the method used for data acquisition - geology, aerogammaspectrometry or aeromagnetometry.

Ion microprobe age determinations of 102 detrital zircon crystals from a sand extrudite, Cretaceous Paraná volcanic province, set limits on the origin of the numerous sand layers present in this major flood basalt province. The zircon U-Pb ages reflect four main orogenic cycles: Mesoproterozoic (1155-962 Ma), latest Proterozoic-early Cambrian (808-500 Ma) and two Palaeozoic (Ordovician- 480 to 450 Ma, and Permian to Lower Triassic- 296 to 250 Ma). Two additional small concentrations are present in the Neoarchean (2.8 to 2.6 Ga) and Paleoproterozoic (2.0 to 1.7 Ga). Zircon age peaks closely match the several pulses of igneous activity in the Precambrian Brazilian Shield and active orogeny in Argentina. A main delimitation of the origin of the sand is the absence of zircon ages from the underlying Cretaceous basalts, thus supporting an injectite origin of the sand as an extrudite that emanated from the paleoerg that constitutes the Botucatu Formation.

U-Pb dating of zircon was undertaken with the Beijing SHRIMP II (sensitive high resolution ion microprobe) on anamphibolite facies granodiorite and an almandine-albite granulite from the Santa Maria Chico Granulitic Complex, southern Brazilian Shield. This work was also done to unravel protolith ages which are often hidden in the array of partly reset data. The obtained metamorphic ages of the granodiorite gneiss and the granulite are 2035 +/- 9 Ma and 2006 +/- 3 Ma, respectively. These data are within the range of metamorphic ages determined in previous studies (2022 +/- 18 Ma and 2031 +/- 40 Ma). However, protolith ages for the granodiorite (2366 +/- 8 Ma) and the granulite (2489 +/- 6 Ma) were obtained which are outside the previously recognized range (> 2510-2555 Ma). The magmatic protolith age of the granodiorite refers to a previously little known magmatic event in the shield. Further investigations may demonstrate that amphibolite facies zircon crystals are useful as a window into geological events in associated granulites, because zircon ages are blurred in the studied granulites.
